When Should Acupuncture Begin Before IVF?

Natural Fertility and IVF Acupuncture Treatment in Milton Keynes

If you are preparing for IVF, you may be wondering when to start acupuncture. Is three months beforehand best? Can you begin once your medication has started? Or is it already too late if your egg collection or embryo transfer is approaching?

The simple answer is: there is no single timetable that suits everyone. The best time depends on your fertility history, age, menstrual cycle, diagnosis, previous IVF response and planned treatment dates.

Ideally, begin around three months before IVF

When time allows, I generally recommend beginning acupuncture approximately three months before IVF. This gives us an opportunity to understand your complete fertility history, provide consistent support and review how you respond before treatment starts.

During this preparation period, we may consider:

Your menstrual cycle and ovulation.

Previous IVF cycles and response to medication.

Conditions such as PCOS, endometriosis or fibroids.

AMH, antral follicle count and other relevant results.

Sleep, digestion, energy and emotional wellbeing.

Your medication, supplements and IVF timetable.

From a traditional Chinese medicine perspective, treatment is personalised. Two women with the same fertility diagnosis may have very different symptoms and TCM patterns, so they should not automatically receive the same treatment.

Can I start after IVF medication has begun?

Yes. Many patients first contact me after beginning stimulation medication. Acupuncture may still be offered as complementary support, depending on your health, treatment stage and appointment availability.

Please tell us:

When your medication started.

Your expected scan dates.

Your likely egg-collection or embryo-transfer date.

Whether you are having a fresh or frozen transfer.

Any symptoms or concerns you are experiencing.

Continue all medication, scans and blood tests exactly as directed by your fertility clinic. Acupuncture supports conventional fertility care; it does not replace it.

Is it too late just before egg collection or embryo transfer?

It may not be too late to receive supportive acupuncture, but expectations should be realistic. One last-minute treatment cannot change ovarian reserve or guarantee implantation.

Some patients value acupuncture during this stage because it provides a calm, supportive space during an emotionally demanding process. Research into acupuncture alongside IVF has shown some encouraging findings, but results are mixed and no particular acupuncture schedule has been proven to guarantee a successful IVF outcome.

If your procedure is approaching, contact us with the date so we can advise whether an appointment is appropriate and available.

How frequently will I need acupuncture?

Frequency is based on your individual circumstances. Many patients begin with weekly acupuncture during IVF preparation. Appointments may sometimes be timed more closely around particular stages of treatment when appropriate.

Following your first consultation, I will explain what I recommend, why I recommend it and when your progress should be reviewed. Treatment should be purposeful and personalised—not continued indefinitely without review.
